Sathyabama University’s 24th convocation held at the university auditorium on 27th April 2015. Dr.Jeppiaar, Chancellor of Sathyabama University delivered the Inaugural address. He said that the institution would start a free IAS coaching academy for their students to turn them into bureaucrats. “We will train students in civil service exams from their second year of study,” he said.
ISRO Chairman A S Kiran Kumar, who was the chief guest awarded the Honarary Doctractes to Cine Actor Vivek and Managing Director of Sakthi Masala Private Limited, P C Duraisamy and delivered the Convocation Address.
In his convocation address, he spoke about the necessity of crowd sourcing. “Today a lot of softwares are developed abroad and purchased by institutions at a high cost. So, we are trying to bring in a process where academic institutions start working on such software technologies themselves,” he said.
Recently, ISRO brought out structural analysis software called FEAST (Finite Element Analysis of Structures). The ISRO chairman said that institutions are allowed free download of the software and they are being asked to bring in case studies which can be incorporated in the software. “There is a host of technologies in which we are trying to envisage use of academic institutions and students pursuing M Tech programs to participate in such activities,” he said.
The chairman also spoke about 7 projects and launches planned under the ISRO until March 2016. This includes the launch of PSLV in June this year which will carry three disaster monitoring constellation satellites and the launch of GSAT 15 in October.
“The Director General of Civil Aviation had recently announced services of APV (Approach procedure with vertical guidance) for precision approach for vertical landing. This will make sure that India is the 3rd country to avail such services, enabling the aircrafts to come close to the landing point,” he said.
He also said adapting to changing technologies would be useful for the current crop of engineers to shine in their respective fields and presented certificates to research scholars and degree holders.
Speaking on the occasion, Vivek said that he felt privileged to be a recipient of the honorary doctorate degree. It is like an encouragement that makes me want to contribute to society more, Vivekh, who was conferred with the Padma Shri by the Government of India for his contribution to the field of arts in 2009, said. Taking a leaf out of Swami Vivekananda’s teachings on education, Vivekh told the students that it was important to follow what was learnt instead of just cramming for the sake of passing in exams.
He also praised Jeppiaar, the founder and chancellor of the University, and said that discipline was one of the core principles espoused by him.
“Jeppiaar sir has been doing a great work as he, through the institution has guided thousands of students,” he said.He further stated that recognitions like these made him feel he was not a Tamilian or a South Indian but rather an Indian first.
Along with the Honorary Doctorates, Sathyabama University awarded a total of 1,878 undergraduate and 777 postgraduate students and 98 doctorates were conferred with their degrees at the convocation. Of these, 45 were gold medallists. It is to be noted that 41% of the students had secured First class with distinction and 59% of the students have secured First class.
Dr.Marie Johonson, Dr.Mariazeena Johnson, directors of Sathyabama University were present in the Convocation.
Apart from this Top Recruiters namely Infosys, Cognizant, Wipro, Cap gemini, Bank of Newyork, IDBI, Tech Mahindra including 148 companies visited the Sathyabama University for the placement of students. Out of 1552 registered students, 1415 students were placed for job by Top Recruiters. Nearly 91% placement done as on 23-4-2015. Students are placed at Highest Salary from 15 Lakhs per annum to Average 3 lakhs per Annum. On Achiever’s Day 25th April 2015 placement orders given to the students.
